    FULL SPECIFICATION TABLE

    General Specification

    Common Name Cilantro microgreens (Coriander)
    Botanical Name Coriandrum sativum
Seed Type Conventional, untreated, non-GMO; available as whole or split (monogerm) seed — split seed recommended for faster, more uniform germination
Stem/Leaf Color Slender pale-green to ivory stems; vivid bright-green cotyledons developing into feathery, frilly true leaves characteristic of mature cilantro
Flavor & Texture Bold, citrusy, and herbal with a bright peppery finish; crisp and juicy stems; notably lacks the soapy undertone sometimes associated with mature cilantro
Seed Count per 10g ≈700–1,000 seeds per 10g (≈70–100 seeds/g for whole seed; split seed counts may vary)

    Cultivation Data

Difficulty Medium — slower to germinate and more sensitive to mold than most microgreens; rewards attention to airflow and careful watering
Preferred Medium Soil or coco coir; firm, even seed-to-medium contact is essential; a thin top-dressing of fine vermiculite is strongly recommended to reduce mold and aid hull shedding
Seeding Density (1020 tray) 40g per 1020 tray (25×50 cm) — widely confirmed commercial standard
Seeding Density (10x10 cm) ~3.2g per 10×10 cm
Expected Yield ≈200–300g per 1020 tray (5×–7.5× seed weight); higher yields of up to 380g possible under optimised conditions with full true-leaf development
Soaking Optional: 8–12h in cool water; drain well before sowing. Not universally required — well-moistened medium can substitute effectively
Blackout Days 4–6 days under weight (stacked trays with a paver) until sprouts are 2–3 cm tall
Watering, pH & Temp Bottom watering preferred; keep medium evenly moist but never waterlogged. pH 6.0–6.5. Temperature 18–22 °C. Ensure consistent airflow throughout the growing period to prevent mold
Sprouting Time 5–7 days after sowing (split seed); 7–8 days (whole seed)
Harvest Time 16–21 days from sowing; harvest at cotyledon stage (14–16 days) for a milder flavour, or at first true leaf stage (18–21 days) for maximum flavour intensity and chef appeal

    Health & Nutrition

Vitamins Vitamin K (exceptional — supports blood clotting and bone health), Vitamin C (immune support and antioxidant), Vitamin E (fat-soluble antioxidant; concentration notably higher than in sunflower seeds), Vitamin A (from beta-carotene), folate (B9)
Minerals Potassium, manganese, iron, copper; moderate calcium and magnesium
Notable Compounds Linalool and other terpenes; aromatic aldehydes; polyphenols; high carotenoid profile including beta-carotene (3× more than in mature cilantro leaves), lutein, and zeaxanthin — among the highest concentrations found in any microgreen
Health Benefits Strong antioxidant defence via vitamins C, E, and a rich carotenoid complex; Vitamin K supports bone health and blood coagulation; lutein and zeaxanthin contribute to eye health and protection against age-related degeneration; aromatic compounds traditionally associated with digestive comfort; beta-carotene concentration comparable to carrots
    ABOUT

Cilantro microgreens are the secret weapon of professional chefs — intensely aromatic, with a clean citrus-herb fragrance that fills the room the moment you cut them. Unlike the mature herb, the microgreen form delivers that bold, fresh cilantro character with a bright peppery finish and none of the soapy undertone that divides opinion. Scatter them raw over tacos, stir into a quick salsa verde, or drape a small handful over a steaming bowl of laksa just before serving — they wilt gracefully and perfume the whole dish. Stock is limited and demand from restaurants is constant, so if you've been curious, now is the time to start your first tray.

    GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
1 Fill your tray with 3–4 cm of moist soil or coco coir and press it down firmly with an empty tray — cilantro needs excellent seed-to-medium contact, and this step alone will noticeably improve your germination rate.
2 Optional but helpful: soak your seeds in cool water for 8–12 hours, then drain well. You'll notice the seeds swell slightly and their papery shell softens — a sign they're ready to wake up. Skip the soak if you're short on time; well-hydrated medium works nearly as well.
3 Scatter 40g of seed evenly across a 25×50 cm tray (or ~3.2g for a 10×10 cm tray). Lightly top-dress with a thin layer of fine vermiculite — this clever trick keeps the seeds moist, dramatically reduces mold risk, and helps the seedlings shed their husks as they push upward.
4 Stack your seeded trays under a weighted paver or heavy tray for 4–6 days of blackout. The gentle pressure encourages strong, stocky stems — peek under the edge after day 3 and you'll start to see pale, reaching sprouts pushing toward the surface.
5 Move your tray into the light once the sprouts are 2–3 cm tall and the first seed leaves are showing. Keep the temperature between 18–22 °C and maintain good airflow — cilantro is prone to mold in still, humid air, so a small fan nearby makes a real difference.
6 Water from the bottom by pouring into the lower tray daily — this keeps the foliage dry and Target a pH of 6.0–6.5. Watch as the canopy shifts from pale yellow to a confident, glossy green within a day or two of light exposure.
7 Harvest at 16–21 days, once the first true leaves are well developed and the frilly, feathery shape of real cilantro has emerged. Cut about 2–3 cm above the soil with sharp scissors, take a deep breath — that citrus-herb aroma is your reward — and serve immediately or refrigerate unwashed for up to 5–7 days.
