    ABOUT

China Rose is one of the oldest heirloom radish varieties in cultivation, brought to Europe by Jesuit missionaries in the 1850s, and it has earned its place on every serious microgreens tray since. The cotyledons emerge with rose-to-magenta stems that practically glow against deep green leaves, making every harvest tray look as good as it tastes. Bite into a stem and you get a sharp, clean radish heat — crisp and juicy, never bitter — that cuts through rich dishes like avocado toast, soft cheese, or a fatty bowl of ramen in a way that dried spice simply cannot. Stock is available now in Europe, and this fast turnaround variety means you could be harvesting your first tray within the week.

    GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
1 Prepare your tray: Fill a 25×50 cm (or 10×10 cm) tray with pre-moistened soil or coco coir to about 2–3 cm depth, levelling the surface so seeds distribute evenly — a lumpy surface leads to patchy germination, so take an extra minute here.
2 Sow the seeds: Scatter 25–30 g of seeds evenly across the 25×50 cm tray (2–2.4 g for a 10×10 cm tray) using two or three passes for good coverage. No soaking needed — these seeds germinate eagerly on their own, and wet seeds clump together and are tricky to spread.
3 Mist and cover: Give the seeds a gentle mist of water, then stack another tray on top (or use a blackout dome) and add a little weight — a 1–2 kg object works well. This helps the radicles push firmly into the medium, anchoring the plants for a stronger stand.
4 Blackout phase (2–3 days): Keep the covered tray at 18–22 °C in the dark. Peek after day 2 — you'll see a forest of pale, reaching sprouts pushing against the lid. Once they're about 2–3 cm tall and starting to lift the cover, they're ready for light.
5 Uncover and water: Remove the cover and give the tray a thorough bottom-watering (pour water into the reservoir tray below). From now on, always water from below to keep the foliage dry and reduce any mould risk — radish foliage is notoriously hard to dry once it gets wet.
6 Grow under light (4–6 days): Place under a grow light or on a bright windowsill. Watch the stems blush pink over the next few days as the light triggers the anthocyanins — it's one of the most satisfying colour transformations in microgreens growing. Water by bottom-watering once daily, and stop watering 12 hours before harvest.
7 Harvest at 7–10 days: When the cotyledons are fully open and standing 6–10 cm tall, harvest with a sharp knife or scissors, cutting just above the growing medium. Dry the cut greens gently before storing in a breathable container in the fridge — they'll stay crisp for up to a week.
